A Computational Knowledge engine for factual queries!

"An ambitious long-term project to make all systematic knowledge immediately computable by anyone" is a sentence that needs to be deconstructed word for word to understand what Wolfram Alpha (www. wolframalpha.com) is all about. Described as a computational knowledge engine, the brainchild of scientist Stephen wolfram is not a search engine, according to its creators; although it would be easy to mistake the lone text box interface for representing one. It would be simpler to understand Wolfram alpha as a service provided over the Internet for obtaining answers based on "factual information rather than opinion," said Conrad Wolfram, director of International strategy, Wolfram Alpha. "There are many pieces of factual information important for every day life." This includes the weather, the number of calories in your lunch or financial calculations for your shares. A search engine would provide you with a lot of relevant links, and you would need to scout for the answers. Wolfram Alpha computes the exact answer for you, he said, explaining how a computational knowledge engine would be relevant in the life of an average user.

Did You Know That Turtles Can Pull in Their Legs?

Yes, turtles can pull their legs into their shells. And that's not all. They can pull in their heads and tails too. Turtles can do that because their bones are soft and are easy to bend. A turtle's shell is fused to the backbone, and the ribs are flattened and widened for more support. Turtles have no way to defend themselves other than by withdrawing their exposed head, legs and tail back into their shell. The neck, which is flexible, is retracted in an S curve to perform this maneuver. Turtles pull their head, legs and tail into their shell if they think they're in danger, or when they want to rest or sleep. They also do it when they're in hibernation during the winter.

Why Do People Ride in Taxis?

Some people do not own cars. They get around in other ways, such as riding on a bus or walking. Sometimes buses and walking are too slow, so people take taxis. A taxi is usually safe, and it can be very convenient. Taxis take you right to where you want to go. Most taxi drivers know the streets very well and can take shortcuts. As cities become more and more congested, many people are increasingly reluctant to take their cars into the city. And yet they need a quick way to get around, and the taxi is the answer to their need. Almost all cities of moderate size will have taxicabs. These eliminate the necessity of waiting for buses or walking long distances. They also provide services for people who do not have automobiles of their own.

Daniel happy to bid Harry adieu

Playing Harry Potter is what put Daniel Radcliffe in the limelight, but the young actor who aspires to outgrow the image is looking forward to wrapping up the last movie in the series next year. Once the final Harry Potter movie is done with, he will have all the time in the world to try out other interesting characters that come his way."We're getting to the finish line. It's going to be very strange. At the moment, whenever someone calls up with a script for a really great part, and they say they're shooting in April, I have to say I'm not available. To not have to do that anymore will be quite liberating," he said. Adding, "I never have to work again unless I want to. Once you're in the position where you can be very, very choosy as an actor, you have a duty to be very, very selective about what you do. Money is not what motivates me. It's never been a driving factor in my life or in the lives of anyone around me growing up. It's not even an issue."

Why Did Apatosaurus Have Such a Monstrous Tail?

An Apatosaurus grew to a length of 40 feet (12 m) from its snout to the tip of its tail. It weighed as much as 34 tons (30 t). Most of that great weight was right over its legs. Its neck ended in a fairly small head. Without its long, heavy tail it would have tipped over. The blue whale is the largest animal on earth today. In fact it is probably the largest that has ever lived. Supported by salty ocean water an adult blue whale can grow to weigh a stupendous 190 tons (170 t). On land Apatosaurus at 34 tons (30 t) and Ultrasaurus at 152 tons (136 t) could function as exclusively terrestrial animals, supporting their great weighs on their huge legs alone. Brontosaurs not only survived, they flourished by evolving a skeletal structure capable of supporting their enormous bodies. Dynamics of balance, not unlike those applied to a suspension bridge, supported the heavy body between a long neck and tail. Even so their bulk kept brontosaurs firmly among the plodders and well out of the ranks of the small, more active herbivores and the highly active predatory carnivores of the time. But they all died at the same time.

Did You Know that Baby Goldfish Are Almost Black When They Hatch?

When goldfish hatch from their eggs they're a dark color, almost black. As they grow bigger, most of them turn an orange color. Some, though, turn white instead of orange as they grow bigger. Goldfish were first bred in ancient China as decorative fish. They were produced through selective breeding of a particular variety of roach that displayed orange coloring. Today some commercially bred goldfish still owe their origin directly to that fish, while some others are the result of cross-breeding. The beautiful nishiki carp was bred in Japan. A fish called a crucian carp is the ancestor of the goldfish. The goldfish came from a relative of the crucian that had an orange color.

Composition-the Shapes within Your Photography.

Composting a picture simply means arranging type shapes and tones within it in a pleasing pattern. But it is not always easy to 'arrange' things. After all, we cannot move mountains, trees and building, or clouds and the sun. But you can move around yourself, and you can decide how much of the scene before your camera to include or leave out. Firstly, what is a good composition and what is a bad one? A good one looks well-balanced and is not cluttered and fussy: there is nothing to make the eye restless, so that it tends to wander away out of the photograph altogether. Good balance is evident when the picture does not seen lop-sided or top heavy, as it might if all the heavy, dark tones were crowded into one part. This business of balance in composition is very important and really does make a difference to the way a viewer reaches to your photographs. The way we arrange our subject will automatically put certain ideas into the viewer's mind. Both portraiture and action photography impose compositional requirements of their own, and these should be ignored only when there is a very good reason-which will not happen very often. Good composition is therefore a combination of several things, all of which combing to make the picture well-balanced and make the arrangement of the subject seem logical and in keeping with the surrounding.

Where is the Mouth of a Starfish?

A starfish's mouth is on the underside of its body. The mouth is the opening in the center where the five arms meet. When a starfish wants to eat, its stomach comes out through the mouth, closes over the prey and digests it. The mouth of the starfish is located in the center of its underside. There are no teeth or tentacles in the mouth. Instead the starfish uses a unusual method of digestion in which it turns its stomach inside out, envelops the prey and digests it outside the body. A starfish has tubular feet with suction pads on the ends for attaching themselves. To eat a bivalve shellfish the starfish uses the suction feet to pull at the shell until it opens.

What Is a Typhoo's Eye?

A typhoon is a lot of clouds swirling around in a circle. In the center are very few clouds. If we looked down on a typhoon from above you'd see a hole like an eye in the middle of the clouds. That's why a typhoon's center is called the eye. Typhoons, created by strong up droughts of air, turn in a counterclockwise direction in the Northern Hemisphere. The center is called the eye and has no clouds. It is produced by a strong down drought and it may be 20 to 30 miles (30 to 50 km) in diameter in a fully developed typhoon. In the eye of a typhoon there are very few clouds and very little wind. No rain falls in the part called the eye.

Why Do Railways Have Signals?

It would be very dangerous if there were no traffic signals on railways. One train could crash into another head-on. Railway traffic signals are also needed because one train could crash into the back of the train in front. When there are traffic signals, we needn't worry. They tell us to stop for danger, or to go slow, or when it's safe to go fast. Just as towns and cities have their traffic signals for automobiles, the railroads have signals, and they are classified according to their use:
1. Traffic signals. These are essentially the same as the signals that are used on roads. They tell the train engineer to "Go," "Stop," "Be careful" or "Slow down."
2. Signs. These are used between workers in places where it is too noisy to hear voice signals, such as in marshalling yards. There are signs that are given by hand meaning "Go forwards," "Go backwards" or "Slow."
3. Signposts. These are posted along the railroad tracks to inform the train engineer of the condition of the roadbed or the degree of a curve or slope, or to warn him of a crossing where he must blow his whistle. Railroad signals vary from country to country.

How Does an Eagle Catch Its Food?

Eagles have sharp eyes and fly high in the sky looking for prey on the ground below. If a an eagle sees the motion of a small bird or animal it dives quickly to try to capture the victim with its sharp claws. Some eagles live near water and feed on fish. Others inhabit mountainous areas and catch small birds and animals. On the hunt, eagles ascend in a spiral pattern using up draughts and search for prey from above. Their eyesight is very keen and they are able to distinguish distant objects with a power eight times greater than that of humans. Eagles have great strength in their talons and use them to squeeze their victims to death. An eagle's sharp, hooked beak tears the flesh of its prey into small bite-sized pieces but is not used to kill or capture.

Why Do Dogs Bark at Strangers?

Long ago dogs lived in packs. If a stranger came around, one dog would bark and warn the others, and they would run the stranger off. Your dog thinks of you as one of its pack. If a stranger comes near you or your home your dog will bark to keep him away. In the animal would there is social space, a region that is like the animal's territory, and personal space, which is the small area very close to the animal. If a man or animal enters an animal's social space, the animal may just growl a warning. An example is a dog growling as strangers approach a home. If the invader then persists and enters the animal's personal space, the animal may attack the invader and attempt to drive it out. Though a dog may fight to protect its space, it will allow anyone that it knows to enter it without harm.

Why Do some bugs Stink?

To protect themselves from their enemies. When a stinkbug is attacked it sprays liquid from holes in its body. The liquid turns into a mist that smells terrible. When other insects breathe in the mist their bodies begin to shiver and shake. Stinkbugs produce an odor so revolting it is hard to describe. The smell comes from a gland that secretes a liquid. Sprayed out through holes located where the middle legs join the body, the liquid becomes a mist with a foul smell that drives away enemies. The smell has no effect, however, in some attackers such as praying mantises, chickens or frogs. One kind of stinkbug, which lay its eggs on cedar and other needles, uses the spray to protect the larvae. And some of the bugs found living in colonies on arrowroot leaves use their smelly spray to warn other members of the colony of an attack.

Begin with Portraits

When we aim fro in a portrait is an impression of the person in the picture. At its simplest, that can be a frontal view of the face-a map of the face, so to speak. It is not essential that a portrait should have a head and shoulders filling the picture area, although the composition of the picture should be as carefully organized as that of any other king of picture. Direct sunlight on a face will seldom produce a pleasing effect. There will be too much contrast between the shadows and the brightly lit parts, or highlights. Portrait subjects did not have to sit still or stand around like tailors' dummies. The word ' portrait' suggests something rather precious, a bit far removed from the idea of a simple snapshot, which can in fact make a very good portrait. Aim simply for a good likeness of the person portrayed. Do not make a big performance out of taking someone's picture-we will only succed in making them feel awkward. People often feel more relaxed when photographed in their own surroundings, rather than in a formal studio.

Why Do We Plant Tulips and Hyacinths in the fall

Because if their bulbs don't spend the winter in the earth, they will not bear pretty flowers in the spring. Tulip and hyacinth bulbs can stand very cold weather. They even grow roots and buds while it is still winter. Than as soon as it becomes warm their flowers bloom. If we plant tulips and hyacinths in the spring like other plants, they will still bud and grow. But sometimes no flowers will bloom, or if they do they will come very late. The plants grow best in places where there are four seasons. Usually the flowers that bloom in early spring are those that are resistant to cold and were planted in the fall. Flowers that bloom in the summer and fall are those that are not very resistant to the cold and were planted in the spring. When bulbs that are not very resistant to the cold are planted in the fall, they remain dormant during the winter, producing no buds or roots. And if cold-resistant bulbs are planted in the spring their flowers bloom late and damage easily in warm weather.

Why Did Some Dinosaurs Have a Crest on Their Head?

Lambeosaurs had two kinds of crest on their heads. The young had small ones that developed as they matured. No one knows for sure why they were crested, but maybe the crests served the same purpose as a peacock's tail feathers do today, distinguishing males from females. Lambeosaurs was one kind of Hadrosaurs or duckbilled dinosaur. Not all duckbills had crests but those that did had crests of different shapes. Probably the shape of the crest was a sign of the particular breed or type of duckbilled dinosaur. Hadrosaurs, or duckbilled dinosaurs, are named for their facial features rather than their eating habits. Growth of the crests throughout a duckbill's life suggests that their most likely function was as a secondary sex trait.

Color Prints-Photography

Color prints are the most popular product in the snapshot market. the color enprint has become spectacularly popular largely because of the huge sales for cameras which produce tiny negatives-the simple little 110 and 126 cameras. Color prints can be made from transparencies, but the print cannot possibly look exactly the same as the original as it encompasses a smaller range of brightness. However, it does give the photographer an opportunity to alter the color blas if he wishes. Color prints can be transferred on to a canvas background and famed for hanging on the wall. However, textured canvas of paper destroys fine detail-choose a glossy paper where it is important to keep maximum sharpness.
