Building Your Slide Collection?

Slides are returned from the processing houses in neat little boxes, and these offer a good deal of protection to the rather vulnerable emulsion-which soon picks up dust and fingerprints, and is quite easily scratched. If you do a great deal of projecting it is probably better to store your slides in such a way that each box or container represents one slide show, and is indexed accordingly. However we decide to store our slide collection we should attend to two important jobs as soon as the pictures come back from the processing house, First we should edit them, and then we should title them. The best best way to edit a set of sides is to use as slide sorter. This is a box with a light inside it and an opalescent top. the slides are laid out on top and shuffled around until they are in the most satisfactory order. Next we need to identify and title and number the slides, so that we can identify the subject even years later. The best way to deal with our titling is to make notes at h e time we take our pictures. Some photographers prefer to remount slides in glass mounts for better protection of the delicate emulsion. It does not matter a great deal what sort of mounts we use but we should aim at a standardized system of mounting.

LAN

As larger universities and research labs obtained more computers during the late 1960s, there was increasing pressure to provide high-speed interconnections. A report in 1970 from the Lawrence radiation laboratory detailing the growth of their "Octopus" network, gives a good indication of the situation. A local area network is a computer network covering a small physical area, like a home, office, or small group of buildings, such as a school, or an airport. The defining characteristics of LANs, in contrast to wide area network include their usually higher data-transfer rates, smaller geographic place, and lack of a need for leased telecommunication lines. The development and proliferation of CP/M-based personal computers from the late 1970s and then DOS-based personal computers from 1981 meant that a single site began to have dozens or even hundreds of computers. The initial attraction of networking these was generally to share disk space and laser printers, which were both very expensive at the time. There was much enthusiasm for the concept and for several years, from about 1983 onward, computer industry pundits would regularly declare the coming year to be “the year of the LAN”.

Why Do Dragonflies Fly Around in the Same Place?

They are protecting their territory. The male silver dragonfly claims an area where the female can lay her eggs. Then he patrols that territory, and if any other males come into it he chases them away. The males of some dragonfly species stake out territory and protect it. the silver dragonfly is often seen near water. The male will attack other males to keep them away from his territory, but if a female approaches he mates with her and she lays her eggs while they are still joined together. A male silver dragonfly defends territory that usually is about 65 to 100 feet (20 to 30 m) in diameter.

It kicks with its tail and swims backwards. Some shrimp species swim all the time. They swim in deep water during the day but in shallow water at night. Shrimp usually move around during the dark is search of small fish and other organisms to eat. shrimp that are skilful at walking can walk over the sand and rocks. The ones that are better at swimming use the legs attached to their abdomen, just as a boatman uses his oars, to move about in the water.

Did You Know That Prairie Dogs Build Their Own Town?

Families of prairie dogs burrow in the ground to make tunnels and nests. Since many families burrow in the same area, they build what looks like a large town of prairie dogs. Prairie dogs are small burrowing rodents whose call is something like a dog barking. A family of prairie dogs usually is make up of a male, several females and a number of young. Such a family is known as a coterie, and a number of coteries close together form a town. Some towns may cover as much as 160 acres (65 ha). Prairie dogs eat the grass, especially any tall grass, in the vicinity of their burrow entrances. This eliminates all cover for predators, which can then be spotted in time for the prairie dogs to escape to the safety of their burrow. The prairie dogs' greatest enemy is the black-footed weasel, which is then enough to get inside their burrows and attack them.

Why Do we have Two Ears?

So that we can guess which direction sound is coming from. We are able to do this without moving our head because we have an ear on each side. Ears are shaped just like seashells because that's the best shape for picking up sounds. We have and outer ear, and inner ear and a middle ear. What we call our ear is actually the auricle and is pat of the outer ear. It catches sounds and passes them to the middle ear. They then pass via the diencephalons, or inner brain, to the auditory center in the cerebral cortex, were they are broken down so that they have particular meaning for us.

How Did Stegosaurus Use the Plates on Its Back?

It undoubtedly used the plates to defend itself against its enemies the meat eaters. It might also have used them like a solar power generator to raise its body temperature or as a fan or wind tunnel to cool down when it was hot. It is generally assumed that Stegosaurus' bony back plates served a dual purpose: as a defense mechanism against predatory carnivores and as a kind of thermostat for raising or lowering body temperature by absorbing or deflecting solar energy. Surface heat exchangers and honeycombs of blood vessels could complete this effort.

Scanner

Scanners can be considered the successors of early telephotography input devices, consisting of a rotating drum with a single photodetector at a standard speed of 60 or 120 rpm (later models up to 240 rpm). In computing, a scanner is a device that optically scans images, printed text, handwriting or an object, and converts it to a digital image. Modern scanner typically use a charge couple device (CCD) or a contact image sensor (CIS) as the image sensor, whereas older drum scanners use a photomultiplier tube as the image sensor. Another category of scanner is digital camera scanners, which are based on the concept of reprographic cameras. Due to increasing resolution and new features such as anti-shake, digital cameras have become an attractive alternative to regular scanners.

What Does a Tumblebug Eat?

The tumblebug eats the ding of animals. It makes little balls of dung so that it can roll them to a place where its safe to eat them. It also uses them to feed its larvae. Insects that live on the manure of animals are called dung beetles. One of these is the tumblebug, a beetle that feeds on herbivorous animals' dung, which it rolls into balls. The insect feeds on dung balls and lays its eggs in them. When the larvae hatch, they start feeding on the dung. In ancient Egypt the sacred scarab was a dung beetle and was worshipped as a symbol of the sun moving the earth.

Why Do Bats Hang Upside Down?

A bat's body is well suited to flying. The back legs are very thin. They are connected by a thin skin, called a membrane, that helps the bat fly. But the thin legs and the membrane make it hard for the bat to stand. That's why we always see bats hanging upside down. Bats are mammals that have wings and can fly. A bird's wing has feathers, but the bat's wing is formed from a thin membrane supported by long finger bones, or digits, of the forelegs. Another membrane extends between the tail and the hind legs to help the bat to fly. The animal's body is well suited to flying but not to walking or running.

Are Motorcycle police Everywhere?

Many countries have motorcycle police. The motorcycles may differ in color and design, but their job is the same - to catch people who break traffic rules. With the increase in traffic congestion, motorcycles have come to play an indispensable part in police patrol work. They are used mainly for apprehension of violators of traffic regulation, and their great mobility makes them ideal for the task. Police motorcycles are built to high -performance standards by the world's leading makers: Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha in Japan; Harley-Davidson in the United States; Moto Gucci of Italy and BMW of Germany. Motorcycle duty is more hazardous than patrol car work, and police assigned to it must undergo rigorous training.

Why Do Seeds Stick to Us?

Seeds need to travel to new places so they can spread and grow. But once seeds cannot travel by themselves, they stick to peoples' clothes and to the fur of animals. In this way they are carried from their parent plant to where they can grow and make their own seeds. Methods by which seeds are dispersed include being borne by the wind, as in the case of the dandelion and eulalia; being scattered by the plant itself, as in the case of the touch-me-not and the wood sorrel; and by being carried by animals. Some like the cherry, are inside a fruit, which is eaten by birds or other animals. These through the bird's or animal's body and are eventuall6y ejected.

Why Does Our Nose Run?

Inside our nose is a mist lining. It is called the mucous membrane. When we catch a cold the lining dries out. Our body produces water to make the lining healthy, and that makes our nose run. Our nose also runs when we cry. The nose and eyes are connected by a tube. When we cry it overflows and tears run down our nose. When we catch a cold, the mucous membrane in the nose becomes irritated by the virus. The tissues of the membrane try to kill the virus by increasing their production of water from the blood and the leukocytes, or white corpuscles, that will actually attack the virus. That is the reason our nose runs when we catch cold. Also, mucus that he mucous membrane secretes is continuously being moved towards our nostrils by the action of numerous extremely minute hairs called cilia.

Ban on smoking in films lifted!

According to a recent directive from the Union Health Ministry, the ban imposed on smoking in films by the previous Health Minister has been lifted. While this comes as good news for many film stars, there are several others who feel the ban was desirable and the Health Ministry is needlessly and wrongly bowing to the dictates of the powerful MNC cigarette manufacturers.Since the ban is lifted, many directors have plans to include scenes depicting the hero or the villain smoking, as was common in old films! A publicity still of Ajith's Asal shows the 'Ultimate Star' lighting a cigarette. This permission to smoke on screen is welcomed by many directors, who claimed the earlier ban was a curb on their artistic license, and a person's smoking style could depict his nature and mood. But will young and impressionable viewers be encouraged to smoke when they see their idols lighting up? Undoubtedly, yes! What is your opinion? Start a blog and tell us what you think. When a very senior South Indian film actor was asked his point of view and if he would agree to smoke on screen, he replied that even if he had to do such a scene, he would insist on a message to be displayed saying "Smoking is injurious to health" so that his action does not convey the wrong message to youngsters. That was a real smart answer, as you will agree!

iPhone

Everyone knows about mobile phones, but most of them are unaware of iPhones. It is a internet connected multimedia smart phone manufactured by Apple Inc. Since its minimal hardware interface lacks a physical keyboard, the multi-touch screen renders a virtual keyboard when necessary. The iPhone functions as a camera phone (also including text messaging and visual voicemail), a portable media player (equivalent to an iPod), and an Internet client (with email, web browsing, and local Wi-Fi connectivity). The touchscreen is a 9 cm (3.5 in) liquid crystal display (320×480 px at 6.3 px/mm, 160 ppi, HVGA) with scratch-resistant glass, and can render 262,144 colors. The capacitive touchscreen is designed for a bare finger, or multiple fingers for multi-touch sensing. Most gloves and styluses prevent the necessary electrical conductivity. Loudspeakers are located above the screen and the left side of the bottom of the unit; the microphone is located on the right. Volume controls are located on the left side of the unit and as a slider in the iPod application. Both speakers are used for handsfree operations and media playback. The iPhone features an internal rechargeable battery. Like an iPod but unlike most other cell phones, the battery is not user-replaceable.
