When something scares a shrimp it swims away backwards. It does this by kicking water out in front with its tail. To swim forward, the shrimp uses its legs. Prawns and shrimp are good at swimming forward. But spiny lobsters and fan shrimp aren't so good at this kind of swimming. It swims forward by using its legs. It kicks with its tail and swims backwards. Some shrimp species swim all the time. They swim in deep water during the day but in shallow water at night. Shrimp usually move around during the dark is search of small fish and other organisms to eat. shrimp that are skilful at walking can walk over the sand and rocks. The ones that are better at swimming use the legs attached to their abdomen, just as a boatman uses his oars, to move about in the water.
